Field-tested methodologies for forest carbon inventory and MRV
Insightful articles on REDD+, regenerative agriculture, and GHG auditing
Training materials and resources on sustainable land use
Case studies from real carbon projects across tropical ecosystems
By synthesizing scientific research, field practice, and audit experience, Econepo serves as a hub for credible, applied knowledge in the fight against climate change.
My Journey towards Nature Based Solution

My names is Dr. Nepolion Borah and I am an internationally recognized forest ecologist, carbon monitoring expert, and certified GHG lead auditor, with more than 15 years of hands-on experience in the design, implementation, and assessment of nature-based climate solutions. His work bridges field-based ecological research, advanced carbon accounting methodologies, and international climate policy frameworks.
Currently based in India, I am serving as Lead Auditor at Earthood Services Pvt. Ltd., one of the world’s leading firms for climate and sustainability auditing. In this role, I have led numerous third-party validations and verifications of carbon offset projects under globally recognized standards including the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, Plan Vivo and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
Core Expertise and Methodological Strengths
🌳 Forest Carbon Inventory & Monitoring
I am a subject matter expert in the field of forest carbon estimation, with experience conducting comprehensive forest inventories across tropical, subtropical, and montane forest systems. I am adept at applying IPCC guidelines and Good Practice Guidance for LULUCF to develop scientifically robust baseline scenarios, conduct accurate carbon stock assessments, and design effective emissions reduction monitoring protocols.
💨 Eddy Covariance Method for GHG Flux Measurement
I am among the few Indian experts with specialized experience in the eddy covariance technique—a micrometeorological method used to measure net carbon dioxide exchange between the forest canopy and the atmosphere. This high-resolution, real-time technique provides robust data critical for validating carbon sequestration claims in REDD+ and IFM projects.
🛰️ Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis
With formal training and field applications in GIS and satellite-based remote sensing, I have contributed to land use/land cover change (LUCC) studies, vegetation classification, and degradation mapping. I integrates satellite data (e.g., Landsat, MODIS, Sentinel) with field data to support carbon modeling and ecosystem services valuation.
Flagship Projects & Institutional Collaborations
I have made significant technical and scientific contributions to several high-impact national and international research and development programs:
🌿 DBT National Project on Phytodiversity in the North Eastern Himalayan Region
This multi-institutional research project led by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India focused on documenting plant diversity and assessing ecological resilience in the ecologically sensitive and floristically rich Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot. I led field surveys, floristic inventories, and ecological modeling, supporting conservation strategies for endemic and threatened species.
🌲 ISRO-Sponsored National Vegetation Carbon Project
Under the leadership of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), this project aimed to estimate India’s national vegetation carbon pool using remote sensing and ground truthing methods. I played a key role in integrating field-based carbon measurements with satellite-derived biomass data, helping to improve the accuracy of national carbon stock estimates.
🏔️ National Mission on Sustainable Himalayan Ecosystems (NMSHE)
As part of India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), NMSHE focuses on promoting sustainable development in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. I contributed technical expertise in forest-based adaptation strategies, ecosystem vulnerability assessments, and climate-resilient land use planning.
🌍 World Bank’s Ecosystem Services Improvement Project (ESIP), implemented by ICFRE
This flagship project, implemented by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), aimed to restore degraded forest landscapes while enhancing livelihoods. I supported the design and execution of forest inventory and Caron monitoring protocols, helping quantify the ecosystem service co-benefits of reforestation and agroforestry interventions.
International GHG Auditing and Global Field Experience
As a Certified Lead Auditor for GHG offset projects, I have conducted third-party assessments for nature-based climate solutions in:
Southeast Asia (Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, etc): Validating REDD+ and IFM projects.
Sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Uganda, DRC, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, etc): Auditing community-based reforestation and regenerative agriculture and grassland management initiatives.
South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh): Assessing ARR and soil carbon enhancement projects.
Central & Latin America (Belize, Brazil): Evaluating forest carbon projects in the Amazon basin under VCS/CCB standards.
His audits ensure environmental integrity, compliance with standard methodologies, and transparency in emission reduction reporting, helping projects secure credibility in the international carbon market.
Academic Contributions and Research Impact
I maintains active profiles on Google Scholar and ResearchGate, where his peer-reviewed research has garnered international citations. His publications reflect interdisciplinary work spanning:
Forest biomass estimation
Ecosystem service valuation
Biodiversity conservation
Land-use change modeling
Carbon flux analysis
My Core Values
